It is a bit hard to swallow. I've run aGUS card on my 486/50 for over a
year. It works great with all GUS software, games, and DOOM! It must be
another problem.

Well, I have a 486DX-50 with a very normal Tseng ET4000
SVGA with 1 Meg, Seagate brand IDE controller, GUS with 1Meg and a
ISA bus running at 10Mhz (Clk/5) The motherboard is a Sis VLB board
with AMI bios on it.
Using this setup, Doom works fine. No problems whatsoever.
I don't think the problem lies with the 50Mhz chip. Check the BIOS
settings. Perhaps the bus speed is too high or something (I'm guessing)
Ciao.

A warning to anyone installing the gus0041?.zip upgrade: If you have
Borland C++ 4.0 or any program which uses version 2 of the Borland custom controls
DLL file, the gus install program will overwrite the new version with an older one!
You should copy the file (BWCC.DLL) to another name, and then copy it back over.
I haven't checked to see if the GUS programs can use the new version yet, though.

Subject: GUS and ISA-bus speed
Hey, I ran my GUS in a 33MHz i486sx (ISA), with a bus speed of 1MHz
(clck/3) and I never had any problems.
Well, I always had problems with QEMM and certain games (like Dune 2, for
example) using SBOS or ULTRAMID, but MEGAEM escaped these problems.
I don't know if the bus speed had anything to do with it, but you never can
tell with the IBM's convoluted architecture.
Anyway, using EMM386 fixed my problems (so I had a separate config.sys file
for using EMM386 when worst came to worst.)
Once in a while, wheN I played a MIDI file under Windows 3.1, I swear I could
tell a note dropped out. But when I played that section of the MIDI file
again, I couldn't find any dropped note. Was it justme? Oh yeah, this was
with the "new" drivers (the ones that came with PMAKER)

I don't think the speed of the motherboard is to blame but probably some
other peculiarity in the MB. Both DOOM and the 32-bit AIL drivers run in
protected mode, so your friend might need to use the low IRQs (7 or lower) for
both the GF1 IRQ and the SB/MIDI IRQ. Playing DOOM and certain games with the
32-bit AILs while my GUS is on IRQ 12 will cause intermittent crashes on my
machine.
DOOM doesn't use Ultramid. Its GUS code is integrated into the game. The
32-bit AIL's don't use Ultramid either. You should unload Ultramid whenever
you want to play DOOM or a game that uses the 32-bit AILs.

The new setup has been rather flaky for me. It always fails the SBOS
and DMA diagnostics on my machine.

What disks did your GUS come with? If you have disks earlier than version
2.06, then your GUS was packaged before Gravis were shipping Powerchords and
Session with their card. Mailing in your registration card _should_ get
you those two apps.

IRQ 7 does cause problems for digital audio on some machines, resulting in
a lot of noise and other garbage to come out of your speakers. Since IRQ 5
is already taken, try IRQ 3 or 4 for your MIDI/SB IRQ. (4 is the IRQ for
COM1, and 3 is the IRQ for COM 2, so if you have a mouse on one of the com
ports, then choose the other IRQ. COM port IRQs can usually be used by a
soundcard if the COM port isn't in use.)

Look on the 2.06L disks on the Epas mirrors. If charang.pat isn't
on those, then try the file gus0034.zip.

The new Windows driver supports sampled release, so that feature was put
into a preliminary version of PML. However, Bruce (PML's author) didn't
like how it turned out (a problem with the envelopes, I think) so he took
out the support for sampled release.

If the music volume is very uneven, then you might try configuring the
game for SB instead of Adlib (if it's currently configured for Adlib).

There should be no conflict since I use both of these programs. Do you
have QDPMI turned on and loaded when you load QEMM? Megaem is DPMI
compliant.

$ Hi! I have this problem I hope someone out there can help me with...
$
$ I have a 486 Dx2 66 Mhz Computer with one Gravis Ultrasound 1Mb installed.
$ I have installed the QEMM386 v7.03 Memory manager on it. Everything works
$ fine with the gus, both native and sbos support. But when I try to run
$ megaem v2.02 (or any other version) I get the message that my EMS memory
$ is not compatible. When I try to disable the EMS memory with the Megaem switchm
$ I get a message telling me that the Gravis Ultrasound is currently in use
$ buy another program.
$
$ The only problem is, there is no such program running.
$
$ I forgot to mention that I have 4Mb of RAM. I ran the same program on my old machine.
$ That was a Copam 80486 Dx 25Mhz with 8Mb of RAM. On that machine everything worked
$ just fine.
$
$ I would be most happy I someone could help me.
MegaEm works best of all with QEMM, as Jayeson will probably comfirm. My
guess is that you have used up all 4Mb of memory before attempting to load
MegaEm. It needs a 64K EMS handle. If you are loading Smartdrv, that
might account for it, but a more likely culprit is PcKwik disk cache. It
is supposed to share memory with other programs, but it fails to do so in
many cases. It's default is to take over everything, and try to share
what it took. Other caches will behave similarly, but PcKwik is the worst.
Other than that, I can only suggest that you load ONLY QEMM 7, and see if
it works then. If it does, then one-by-one, add back in your other TSRs
and drivers until the cause is found. I know it's not QEMM.
Oh, and do not use the EMS:N switch for QEMM, even if you use the
corresponding switch with MegaEm for -NOEMS. The -NOEMS switch is risky
with any memory manager that has put the CPU in protected mode.

Subject: Noise on Output line...
I've been a happy GUS users for almost 6 monthes now, but since I
updated to the new Window drivers I have had this annoying problem.
I have a set of Labtec CS-700 speakers and they turn on and off
when there is a signal. When I am in DOS, they turn on and off
like there are suppose to.
Windows is another story. When I first go into Windows and the
Startup noise plays they turn on but they fail to turn off. They
click and the LED blinks (like they want to turn off but there is
noise on output channel). If I go to the GUS mixer and MUTE LINE
OUTPUT and leave it for 10 seconds, the speakers turn off and
everything is fine until I use the GUS again.
I have not added anything to my machine in monthes and I am at
a loss to explain this....
Any thoughts?
